about

A lyrical Macedonian traditional song with a love theme and unusual ending (for today's outlook on life).

It's an amazing story in four verses where in the first and partly the second the narrator establishes the place and event that is taking place.

The following three verses are a conversation between the 'society' and the maiden who answers back while asleep, with a final statement issued by the maiden at the end of the song.

Translation is available in the 'lyrics' section.

lyrics

Go pratile maloj mome cveḱe da bere
Kaj što bralo tam zaspalo meǵu cveḱeto

Pominalo ludo mlado kraj gradinčeto
Stani stani maloj mome cveḱe ti ovena

Nek se veni nek se suši drugo ḱe naberam
Stani stani maloj mome momče se armasa

Nek s' armasa nek se ženi neka se kerdosa
Jas ḱe odam Sveta Gora za kalugerka

They sent the little maiden, flowers to pick
As she was picking, she fell asleep among the flowers

A young lad passed nearby the garden
“Wake up little maiden, the flowers are fading”

“Let them fade, let them dry, I'll pick new ones”
“Wake up little maiden, the lad is getting engaged”

“Let him get engaged, let him wed,
I'll go to Mount Athos, to become a nun.”
