O Come, O Come Emmanuel

about

This tune might be a 15th Century French church hymn or even an 8th Century Gregorian chant. I didn't know the melody before recording this album, yet on first hearing I connected with it. Its depth and solemnity are tremendous. This aria possesses a kind of mystical feel, typical for the most beautiful spiritual pieces.
In the improvisation part, I use several Balkan-style scales, one of whom is the Minor Pentatonic. This is done purposely: the North-West of Greece is the cradle of the Ikariotiki music (Ικαριώτικα). A large part of that music is being delivered in the Pentatonic, probably the most ancient of all Modes.
