about

I know this song from the American jazz singers, hence the Noel in the title. Only after researching its origins, I discovered that Nowell is the proper Cornish spelling – which in turn comes from the French word Noël, which has its roots in the the Latin word 'Natalis', meaning 'birthday'. The combination of Greek baglamas and a soft keyboard does all the trick here. The rhythm that subtly rumbles behind is a Greek Zeimbekiko (9/8). True inspiration shows itself in the simple melodies that last through the centuries. The First Nowell is one of these melodies.
