about

This is a beautiful Macedonian folk ballad. In a traditional setting, it's performed lively and even on weddings. But I thought that a ballad style would suit much more the love and lyrical theme of this song.

Story: This is the first song that me and my future wife sung in one December night in 2006. There were a Bulgarian couple, Poli and Niki, that I met in London a few years ago. We were always saying that we ought to have a party in the Balkans one day.

And so, in Dec'06 I was going to visit my family and Pavlina and Nikolay arranged to come for a 24-hour visit from neighbouring Sophia, Bulgaria.

They asked could they bring friends, and eventually brought two ladies with them, Kalina and Ginka.

When Ginka entered the house, she simply exclaimed: oh, how beautiful.

It was a great party, all my huge family and three brothers with their families were there, my mother, my dear friends, over 20 people in total. It was wonderful and exciting.

In the excellent Balkan tradition, we were singing songs from the region.

I noticed already the beautiful Ginka, but there was no way that I could speak to her personally in the huge crowd where I was really the host of the event.

But she loved singing, so I suggested that we sing a song together.

Bulgarians know and love most of the Macedonian songs. so, we were going through my ancient Macedonian song-book when Ginka pointed out this song, which translates as Oh, Where's My Darling.

I rarely sing this on my own, but we gave it a try and it sounded beautiful. This was a bonding moment, we both felt.

The rest is history... the next time we sung this song was at our wedding:-)

I recorded it as an audio memory from that event.

lyrics

1.
Ah, kade e mojto libe
Dali misli toa na mene
Jas po nego samo mislam
I za nego jas ḱe umram
2.
Bolen ležev jas po nego
I so solzi na očite
Kaži, kaži verno libe
Kogo ljubiš osven mene
3.
Zošto kaža ti na mama
Kade bevme nie dvajca
Ako libe me prelaga
Podobro e jas da umram
4.
Blaze onoj koj što ljubi
Koj što ljubi verno libe
Toj bescenet kamen nosi
I e veren dur do groba

//{*_*}\\

1.
